Chapter Six

"Girl, how was the session?" Ayotunde asked while munching on some cheese and crackers.

I sighed. "It was good and draining at the same time. Pastor Maria wanted us to open up to our feelings and go back in time to revisit red flags."

“Mmm…” Ayotunde zoned out, thinking about her own red flags.

“So, did you have any red flags?”

Ayotunde shrugged. “I guess we all do after the fact.”

I gave her a puzzled look. "What do you mean?"

With a casual shrug, Ayotunde replied, "I think we all spot them in hindsight, you know? When you're in it, everything seems fine. It's only when things go wrong that those red flags become crystal clear. Love can be pretty blinding."

“Yeah, that may be true, but what about when our family sees those red flags when we can’t see them? I’ve really been thinking about my grandmother and how she warned me. I wish I had listened to her.”

“I don’t know. Red flags and discernment. I went to that class⁠—”

“Oh, so you made it,” I teased.

“Yeah, it was with Pastor Jim Henley. Boy, did it really unearth a lot for our group. They were all crying and going back to old memories. I just sat there stone-faced. You are not going to get me to shed another tear over that man.”

I sat back in my bed and crossed my legs. I really wanted to know Ayotunde’s story a little deeper.

“So, I’m curious. Why are you here? I know your husband left you, but you seem very optimistic about everything. You seem like you have it all together.”

"Girl, I just wanted to come to the US and experience something new," she said with a smile.

I tilted my head in disbelief. "Really? I don’t believe you."

Ayotunde sighed, not wanting to relive what she had been through. “I was living with my husband back in London. We had dreams of being married and living that life. We finally got married, but things changed when I started modeling. He became jealous and said something had to give. I told him no one had to give up anything, but he said home life was not the same. He started cheating on me and saying I was not being the wife he thought I was. Then one day he said it was over.”

I folded my arms, listening intently.

“I mean, we were building a life together and bam, it was over. So, someone in my modeling agency thought I needed a break because I was not doing too well with my modeling gigs. They told me to take some time off. Then, they handed me information about this place and said to come here, get over my breakup, and see about modeling casting calls. So, it’s two-fold for me.”

"Did you love him?" I asked.

Ayotunde placed her cheese and crackers down. “I did. He promised me the world. I thought I could have both worlds. I thought I could have a wonderful relationship and modeling. Well, I was wrong and now I am here.
